How to Structure Your Nursing Resume

1

Professional Summary

State your NMC registration status, nursing specialism (surgical, A&E, ITU, community, mental health), years of post-registration experience, and band level. Mention any specialist qualifications or leadership responsibilities.

2

Registration & Qualifications

NMC PIN, degree/diploma details, and any post-registration qualifications (V300 prescribing, specialist practitioner, leadership courses) should appear high on the page — recruiters and ATS both filter on these.

3

Clinical Experience — Specialism First

Lead each role with the ward type, patient cohort, and bed numbers or caseload size. Include key clinical skills used. E.g. "Band 6 Staff Nurse on a 28-bed acute surgical ward managing post-operative patients including complex wound care and IV therapy."

4

Continuing Professional Development

List relevant CPD, study days, and revalidation evidence. For senior roles, include any quality improvement projects, audits, or change initiatives you led.

Common Nursing Resume Mistakes

  • Not stating NMC PIN or registration status — this is the primary hard filter for all nursing roles
  • Being vague about clinical setting — state ward type, patient group, and bed count explicitly
  • Omitting EPR system experience — EPIC, Cerner, and Lorenzo are increasingly mandatory for NHS trusts
  • Not mentioning band level — NHS band is used as a filter by many ATS systems and recruiters
  • Listing duties only — include any QI projects, audits, or leadership contributions to show progression
